“Wild Florida” is a monthly radio segment featuring what’s happening outdoors in northeast Florida. This month we talked about North Atlantic Right Whales, nesting Sea Turtles, and many events happening in our area. Sunday, May 2, 2021, Sun Ray Cinema in 5 Points is showing “Kiss the Ground,” a documentary that looks at how changing agricultural practices can improve soil and help combat global warming. Afterwards, there will be a panel discussion led by Ashantae Green, an elected member of the Duval County Soil and Water Conservation District. Panelists will include Allen Skinner, Tiffany Bess, Mike Kelcourse and Allen Moore.
Jacksonville’s Parks Department hosts a series of trail walks and bike rides at area parks each month. There are 17 events at 10 different parks from all over the county. Each talk or event is 45 minutes and is limited to 10 people. No reservations are needed but events are weather dependent. Below is a list of May’s events, but for more detail, go to the city’s website.
May 1, 2021, Saturday, Beach Walk, 10 a.m., Huguenot Memorial Park. Located on the Atlantic Ocean off of Heckscher Drive, it’s also part of the Atlantic Flyway, which is the highway in the sky taken by birds during spring and fall migrations. Huguenot is one of 510 premier wildlife viewing sites across the state known as the Great Florida Birding Trail. The park has a nature center that’s open 2 – 5 p.m.
May 18, 2021, Tuesday, Bike Hike, 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Jacksonville Baldwin Rail Trail. There are several trail heads; this bike hikes meet at 1225 Halsema Rd. in the parking lot.
May 19, 2021, Wednesday, Spring Search, 10 a.m. and Discovery Walk 11 a.m.. Ribault River Preserve.
May 20, 2021, Thursday, Adult Time Out, 10 a.m., and Trail Walk 11 a.m., Castaway Island Preserve in the San Pablo area on the Intracoastal Waterway. Park features trails, a nature center and water access for non-motorized and motorized launches.
May 21, 2021, Friday, 10 am, Trail Walk, Losco Regional Park in Mandarin. This park has soccer fields, playgrounds and a picnic pavilion. At the back of the property is a pine woods with 3 miles of trails. Meet at the trail head.
May 25, 2021, Tuesday, Spring Search 10 a.m., Trail Walk 11 a.m., McGirts Creek Preserve on the Westside.
May 26, 2021, Wednesday, Bike Hike at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., Jacksonville Baldwin Rail Trail. See May 18 event listing for details.
May 27, 2021, Thursday, Wildflower Walk at 10 a.m. and Trail Walk at 11 a.m., Sal Taylor Creek Preserve. May not be suitable for strollers.
May 28, 2021, Friday, Adult Time Out at 10 a.m., Julington- Durbin Creek Preserve.
